About TK's Head Huggers

My name is Teresa Krapes.  Two years ago, I decided that I wanted to relearn how to crochet.  I had llamas and alpacas at the time and I was inspired to get into yarn work.  I had crocheted some basic baby blankets when I was a teen but had not done much since.  I had also read about someone doing knitting for charity.  I did some research about crocheting for charity and happened upon the "Head Huggers" website.  There I found all kinds of chemo cap patterns.  I taught myself how to make hats from those patterns and I was hooked.  I called my sister, Cheryl, and told her that I needed yarn and that it was her job to steal yarn from our mother.  She brought me a couple of boxes and I became obsessed with how many hats could I get out of the yarn.  I also became obsessed with trying as many patterns as I could because it was so fun and rewarding to learn new stitches and see the results.  By the time I was done with that yarn, I had made 37 hats.  My sister works in the business office of Mercy hospital in Springfield.  I gave her the hats and said her part was to deliver the hats to the oncology clinic, children's hospital or wherever there was a need.  She loved that job and continues to be my distributor.

Here are some of my first hats:

My crocheting has developed as I am always looking for new things to learn about it.  I've taught myself how to do basic knitting.  I have also made baby blankets and want to make prayer shawls and lapghans.  So much that I want to do for others. The yarn work is a creative outlet as well as my way of stress relief.  And making these items for others gives me an outlet for all the things I want to make.  Most important of all, it is so rewarding to do something that will hopefully bring some comfort to someone who needs it.

Cheryl has decided to leave the crocheting and knitting up to me and other volunteers.  She wants to sew items such as chemo turbins or quilts for Newborns in Need.

Our new group is now listed on the National Head Huggers website.  We will be sending donations to hospitals, clinics and doctors' office in the Central and Southern Missouri area.
